These 3 Major Wellness Trends Are Taking Over the Hospitality Industry

These 3 major wellness trends are changing the face of the hospitality industry as we know it. Those bold enough to adopt these trends before they turn mainstream will find themselves as the pioneers in the new wave of wellness tourism…

1. Wellness extends beyond the spa

In the traditional hospitality industry the word “wellness” equates spa. Even today, when I introduce myself to other hoteliers as a Wellness Consultant, the response is usually “so you work in the spa industry?”.

In today’s world however, narrowing wellness down to the spa is a mistake. Wellness extends far beyond the four walls of the spa and must permeate into the lobby, the F&B outlets, the design, the sounds, smell and lighting, the room amenities as well as the packages and experiences offered.

Wellness is not a destination, it’s a way of life, and today’s travellers are not only living and breathing wellness in their day-to-day life, they wish to see it expand into their travel experiences as well.

2. All travel is wellness travel

Gone are the days where travellers would return from their holidays feeling more tired than when they left. Gone are also the days where travellers would view their voyages as a “break” from their wellness routines.

Today’s travellers are seeking less indulgence and more rejuvenation during their stay.

Travellers are expecting to come home from their travels feeling healthier, more energised and revitalised, ready to re engage with their duties.

This suggests welcoming a complete shift in the way hotels approach their guests from an everything-is-allowed-indulgence approach to a “what will improve their wellbeing?” perspective. Think: Digital Detox, Juice Cleanses, Spa Packages, Luxury Camping and Bootcamps…

3. The way forward is back to the roots

Studies have proven what we’ve all witnessed: during the COVID-19 lockdown and even now as restrictions ease - individuals are finding connection in nature

More and more studies are proving the physical and mental impacts of spending time in nature and I truly believe that the “wake-up call” we all received during the pandemic will lead to a lasting increased desire to spend more time in clean air, green environments and open spaces.

When it comes to travel experiences…

spiritual forest bathing will replace candle-lit bathtub bathing

wild swimming in secluded natural lakes will replace swimming pools and parasols

hiking experiences will replace treadmills

and evenings spent stargazing will replace movie nights

Take the example of Aman’s new Camp Sarika in Utah with the tagline: at one with wilderness. There guests can indulge in a luxury camping escapade in a remote setting, surrounded by stunning desert landscapes and authentic experiences such as storytelling campfires, horse riding and canyoneering.
